University of Toronto Libraries
The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) is the largest research library system in Canada. UTL has a 50 year history of using innovative technologies to further knowledge discovery, to preserve the scholarship of the past and to support it in the future. Marcel Fortin will lead the library’s interests in this project, to further its goals in developing web mapping and digital data management and its mandate to serve the scholarly community.
Department of Geography and Planning, University of Toronto
The department has a long-standing interest in historical geographic research, publication and database construction, and has been the home for the Historical Atlas of Canada and the Canadian Century Research Infrastructure (UT team) and interactive mapping websties based on these. Byron Moldofsky (GIS and Cartography Office) will act as project manager, and the department will provide systems administration and web server capabilities.
University of Alberta Library
This library is a leader in Research Data Management, through its Data Library staff, including project collaborator Larry Laliberté, GIS Librarian. The University of Alberta is the custodian of the HGIS data files for the Canadian Century Research Infrastructure, and will contribute these, as well as their expertise in HGIS data, meta-data, preservation, archiving and distribution to the benefit of the project.
University of Victoria Libraries
The University of Victoria Libraries are committed to the library’s foundational role in acquiring and preserving research resources in the complex digital environment of 21st century scholarship. The Libraries will provide its GIS librarian, Daniel Brendle-Moczuk in support of this project, as well as making available a vast collection of scanned historical maps to the project.
Esri Canada
Esri Canada Limited is a privately held, Canadian-owned company that provides world-class enterprise geographic information system (GIS) solutions. The company recognizes the important role that historical data play in understanding the present as well as meeting the challenges of the future. Dr. Brent Hall, Director of Education and Research at Esri Canada, will lead Esri Canada staff in providing appropriate consulting and technical support to the project.
Neptis Foundation
The Neptis Foundation is a non-profit, non-partisan research foundation which provides grants for specific investigations of urban growth and design issues. Marcy Burchfield the Executive Director of the Neptis Foundation, has a longstanding interest in the study of how cities change over time, using GIS to research these changes, and the distribution of collaborative data for research.
Toronto Green Community – Lost Rivers
Lost Rivers is a program of the Toronto Green Community (TGC), a charitable environmental organization. For 20 years, Lost Rivers volunteers have traced the courses of buried watercourses in Toronto and documented the ecological and human significance of these features. As part of this project, this information will be more widely available, accessible and useable for research and public education.
